Info: Información importante para este tour

Informacion importante a tomar en cuenta:

¿Por qué elegir la agencia de viajes Inticuna?

Machu Picchu Hike Peru is a travel agency in Cusco that operates all packages directly. We do not give commissions to travel agencies or third parties that inflate costs.

The staff that works with us is professional and responsible. Before starting to work with us, our collaborators must go through a training course on customer service and thus improve our entire operation in general.

We have all the permits and tourist certificates, granted by the Municipality of Cusco, and the Minister of Peru (DICETUR - MINCETUR), which guarantees us to operate in Cusco and throughout Peru.

Important info

Arriving in Cusco

The Cusco airport is currently only for domestic flights, so all international travelers by plane must disembark in Lima and go through Customs. Even if your flight to Cusco is the same day by the same airline, you must take your bags in Lima and then re-register them.

The best way to get to Cusco is by air, and there are several options on the airlines. LAN tends to be the most expensive but has more options and flights. Expect flight delays or cancellations. Due to the high altitude of Cusco, it tends to be difficult to land, and any acclimatized weather will stop air traffic. Bus travel is always available, and although the trip can be long, especially from Lima, buses in Peru are very well maintained and comfortable. This option is highly recommended if you are coming from a city closer to Cusco, such as Puno. Buses from Lima will take approximately 20 hours to arrive.

Luggage storage

Any additional luggage you have with you can be left safely in Cusco at your hotel or with us at Machu Picchu Hike Peru while you are walking. We will store your luggage the morning of your hike and return it once you return to Cusco. Make sure your bags have tags, so they are easy to locate.

Altitude

As soon as people book their trip to Peru, specifically to Cusco, they begin to wonder about altitude sickness. The air at high altitude contains less oxygen than at sea level and forces your body to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. For several days at high altitude, your body adjusts to the lower amount of oxygen in the air. For this reason, we always recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before beginning any trek in the Andes. Cusco is a wonderful city with a lot to do, so if you have more time to acclimatize, you won't be bored.

With altitude sickness, you may first feel like you have a flu or a hangover. You may have a headache, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, trouble sleeping, trouble breathing during exercise. If any of these effects become worse, please contact our office and we will help you see a doctor.

Most of the time, these symptoms will be mild. We always recommend that you get into activity slowly, allowing your body to adjust. Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or coca tea. Coca tea has been used since ancient times to help prevent altitude sickness. The leaves of the coca plant contain alkaloids that help bring oxygen to the blood, which helps your body avoid the effects of altitude sickness. Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol and coffee, which will cause you to urinate more often and become dehydrated. Avoid smoking. Smoking makes it harder for your body to get oxygen. Avoid sleeping pills. They can cause shallow breathing at night, making it difficult for your body to absorb oxygen while you sleep.

Remember, the trek to Machu Picchu is not a race. Even those in the best shape will suffer altitude sickness if they run to the top of the mountain too fast. Go slowly, and it will give your body time to adapt to the elevation. Your health care provider can prescribe medications such as acetazolamide and dexamethasone to help prevent altitude sickness. Start the medication two days before you reach high altitude, and continue to take it as long as you are at high altitude. You should remember that this is your vacation and you don't want to be stressed out by the possibility of getting sick from the mountains. Do everything slowly, drink plenty of water and enjoy the coca tea. If something happens and you unfortunately get sick, inform your guide immediately. The guides of Machu Picchu Hike Peru are trained to help you through it.

Weather

Of course, the weather is unpredictable. Generally, the dry season in Cusco is from April to October, but this does not prevent the rain from falling in June or the sun from rising in December, so be prepared. No matter what month you are doing the trek, make sure you have a rain gear that includes a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho and waterproof gloves. Many people forget about gloves, but the cold and wet weather makes walking very unpleasant.

Also, be prepared for four seasons. Trekking in the Andes involves several microclimates, and you should be prepared. Layers are always essential as they are easy to adjust to different temperature changes. Prepare yourself with a warm and inviting jacket as the night will be cold.

First Aid

Each guide at Machu Picchu Hike Peru has received first aid training from a doctor. We hold a mandatory training every February, and all Machu Picchu guides attend. When they guide you, they will have with them a first aid kit for basic medical situations (traveler's diarrhea, cuts, scratches, etc.) and oxygen. They will take good care of you.

In case something unexpected happens and you feel that you can no longer complete the trek, they will discover the safest and quickest way to leave the road and get to a clinic. You will never be left alone; a team member will accompany you every step of the way until you are safely with a doctor. When you wish, we will make sure you still have the opportunity to visit Machu Picchu and reconnect with your group. This way, you can finish your trip, traveling by train comfortably.

Travel Insurance

To protect your travel investment, we recommend the purchase of travel insurance. Obtaining travel insurance before leaving home is highly recommended and very easy. We work with a great agency in the United States, which has helped make it easy and affordable. What a great way to protect yourself while visiting Peru.

Environmental Impact

Machu Picchu Hike Peru uses biodegradable soap and transports all our garbage back to Cusco. Our porters are trained to take care of the trail and pick up other groups' waste as well. We also use ecological portable chemical toilets that allow us to carry the waste. We believe in leaving no trace.

Community

Machu Picchu Hike Peru is proud of the work we do for our community, as this is the main focus of our company. We have worked directly with the villages to help them meet the needs of their families. We have supported local schools by providing them with computers and books. Machu Picchu Hike Peru also sponsors a teacher in the village where most of our porters come from and ensures that their children have the best opportunity for education.

We buy all our food from local farmers and markets and serve the freshest ingredients. We provide English classes for all our staff: guides, porters, chefs and drivers. We are also building a house for our porters. By giving them a safe and comfortable place to stay before and after our walks, they no longer need to sleep on the floor of a friend's house.

And twice a year we take our porters and their families to Machu Picchu. The men and women who work tirelessly have never visited the Lost City of the Incas. That makes this trip our favorite task. It is an honor to show you this place.

We are always looking to do more and partner. Let us know your ideas and we will work to help you.

Personal porter included

All our camping trips include porters, which are responsible for transporting and setting up all the equipment. In addition, they will carry the canvas bag that you will receive at your briefing the night before your hike. Each canvas bag cannot exceed 7 kg / 14 pounds and must include your sleeping bag and air mattress.

Machu Picchu Hike Peru provides each porter with a suitable uniform, salary and insurance. They are the backbone of our company.
